Mary’s Story

Mary Theresa (Bonacorsi) Bussiere was born and raised in Henry, Illinois.  Upon her graduation from Henry-Senachwine Consolidated High School, she attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, majoring in nursing.  While at Bradley, she became a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, and she was proud to call herself a Bradley Brave.  After graduating from Bradley in 2008, Mary moved to Chicago and began working in pediatric neurology at Children’s Memorial Hospital (now Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago).  There she met many wonderful people and discovered her love and passion of working with children.  In 2010, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota with her fiancé, Josh Bussiere, and began working at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare.  Once again, she worked in pediatric neurology and took a special interest in working with and gathering research on patients with spina bifida.  Her love of working in the field of neurology and with children was reinforced during her time at Gillette.

In July of 2012, Mary fell ill after a bike ride.  She suffered from heart failure, and for two weeks, she battled for her life.  On August 5th, 2012, Mary passed away at the age of 27, just 5 days shy of her 28th birthday.  Her friends and family have chosen to remember Mary, her passion and enthusiasm for life, nursing, children, and helping others, and her everlasting legacy by establishing M.A.R.Y. B.
