M.A.R.Y. B. has been supporting nursing advancement at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island for the last several years. Last week, we learned that the funds donated by our foundation have allowed every emergency department nurse at Hasbro to complete the Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC).
The Emergency Nurses Association developed and implemented the TNCC for national and international dissemination as a means of identifying a standardized body of trauma nursing knowledge. The TNCC is a two-day course designed to provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills. This course helps Hasbro maintain the pediatric trauma center designation.
The “Eat, Seek, and Be Mary” fundraiser in Highland, IL and the “Eat, Drink, and Be Scary” fundraiser in Chicago helped to raise over $5,700 for MARY B! These funds will support meals at Ronald McDonald House in Chicago, nursing advancement at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago and Gillette Specialty Children’s Healthcare in St. Paul, MN, and nursing scholarships at Bradley University. Thank you to all who donated and made 2016 another year in which we made a difference in Mary’s honor.
We are pleased to share that Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare has announced the recipient of this year’s Mary Bussiere Nursing Education Scholarship. Pace Pfenning is this year’s recipient and will receive a $1,000 scholarship as she works to complete her graduate nursing degree.
Pace received her RN diploma in 1986 and has worked as a nurse at Gillette for 26 years. She has worked on the inpatient floor and outpatient clinics and is currently an outpatient clinic manager. In 2015, she earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Bethel University. She is now enrolled at Capella University, working toward a Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Management.
As a colleague wrote in Pace’s reference letter, “Pace is a terrific nurse leader and has played a pivotal role in the advancement of the nursing profession at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare.”
We are honored to support the nursing profession at Gillette, a place Mary was proud to work and displayed a passion for care of her patients.
On Saturday, September 10th, 2016, our fifth annual Rhode Island fundraiser was held in Providence at the FOP Lodge. The event raised over $5,500 and will support nursing education at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Additionally, donations made in memory of Steve McGarry will also be donated. Many thanks to those who attended and donated! Last year, the Mary Bussiere fund allowed ER nurses to take the Trauma Nurse Core Course to advance their skills and care for their patients. We will continue to report on how these funds are making an impact at Hasbro.
Bradley University has chosen recipients of the Mary T. Bussiere Memorial Nursing Scholarship for the 2016-17 academic year. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward the cost of tuition. This year’s recipients are Meagan Hall, Malgorzata Kaniewski, and Olivia Malinowski. Recipients are chosen based on good academic standing and for displaying a passion and enthusiasm for nursing. The Mary T. Bonacorsi Bussiere Memorial Nursing Scholarship Endowment has been established at Bradley and will eventually help to fund scholarships for years to come.
Our first St. Louis-area fundraiser was held on Sunday, July 17th, 2016 at Edison’s Entertainment Complex in Edwardsville, IL. The event attracted over 80 participants and raised over $2,100!
We previously held a “Miles for Mary” Memorial Day walk in Henry, IL that last 3 years, but with most of Mary’s family in the St. Louis area now we decided to move the fundraiser south.
The MARY B Foundation holds several fundraisers each year to help up provide nursing scholarships and nursing continuing education at our beneficiaries, including Bradley University, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and Lurie Children’s Hospital.
We look forward to making this an annual event!
On April 18, we provided a meal at the Chicago Ronald McDonald House. This is third straight year that M.A.R.Y. B. has had the privilege of helping out at this great organization. RMH provides housing to families of patients at Lurie Children’s Hospital and relies on volunteer organizations to provide meals.
We are pleased to provide an update on how M.A.R.Y. B. is making an impact at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. Hasbro Children’s Hospital is the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital and the pediatric teaching facility of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The hospital provides care to children in more than 40 specialities. In 2014, Hasbro was designated as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.
As part of the Pediatric Trauma Center designation, emergency department nurses are required to take the Trauma Nurse Core Course. This course provides standardization of trauma education for the purposes of enhancing communication and understanding among all members of the Hasbro ED and trauma teams. The emergency department has an initiative of having all nurses take the course before the end of 2016. Funding for this course is being provided by the Mary Bussiere Fund.
Mary’s Rhode Island family has held fundraisers each of the last 4 years which has allowed M.A.R.Y. B. to establish the fund and relationship with Hasbro. We appreciate everyone who has supported the RI fundraising efforts and look forward to continuing to make a big impact at this outstanding pediatric hospital!
On Friday February 19th, M.A.R.Y. B. donated $4,000 to Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago’s Professional Development for Nurses Fund. The fund provides financial support to nurses focusing on innovation and research. The donation was made possible by funds raised at the “Miles for Mary” walks over the last 3 years as well as our annual Chicago fundraiser. A check was presented by Mary Williams on behalf of the foundation. As a recognition of the donation and to honor Mary’s memory, her name will be added to the hospital’s Gifts of Love Tribute Wall at a ceremony in April. Mary would no doubt be honored to be remembered at the hospital where she started her nursing career!
The 2015 recipient of the Mary Bussiere Scholarship for the Educational Advancement of Nurses has been named at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minnesota. This scholarship, funded by M.A.R.Y. B., is granted to an employee pursuing either a baccalaureate degree in nursing or a graduate degree in nursing or another field related to healthcare.
This year’s recipient is Maja Neumann, a pediatric nurse with five years of experience working in Gillette’s inpatient rehabilitation unit. Maja is currently working on a graduate degree at the University of Minnesota to become a family nurse practitioner.
Maja explained her future goals:
“After gaining experience as a family nurse practitioner, I would love to start my own clinic in an area of Minneapolis that currently has low access to healthcare. I will be able to treat the children I love but also their parents who have the greatest influence over their lives. This scholarship will really help me with the financial aspects of accomplishing my career goals.”
Congrats to Maja, and thank you to the M.A.R.Y. B. supporters who have made this possible!
